Rehabilitation and Retraining

Rehabilitation benefits are intended to restore an injured employee to a job that is closely related to his or her previous employment or in another area which brings the employee as close as possible to his or her pre-injury economic status. Rehabilitation benefits are only provided to "qualified employees," as set forth by Minnesota law. An injured employee also has the right to choose a qualified rehabilitation consultant to assist the employee in developing a rehabilitation plan. Minnesota law states that an employer is liable for the costs of an injured employee's rehabilitation/retraining plan. The costs for which an employer is liable include rehabilitation services, reasonable costs of tuition, books, travel, custodial day care, reasonable costs of travel during job interviews, and reasonable costs for moving expenses for an employee and employee's family if a job is found in another location.
